1.7.07  New Castle Delft is on the move.  Watch this space

As New Castle Delft prepares to move in to its 17th year, the business faces its greatest challenge. The pottery will soon be relocating to Weardale in County Durham. The workshop at Hoults Yard has closed and cleared out. All the kit that I will need has been put in to storage whilst preparations are made for the big move. This should be in early August 07. Watch this space.

16th Nov.05: Josh Allen : Central Heaton Ceramics.

Josh Allen is now  working in the New Castle Delft pottery, where he is developing his range of pottery.

  Ouseburn Heritage, Healthy Walks.
    Maling Pottery
This walk visits the three sites that Maling occupied in the area and finishes at what was claimed to be the largest pottery in the world when it was built, many of the original buildings of which still stand. We will be invited into a studio occupied by a modern day potter where we will be able to see examples of items made and used by workers at Maling. This studio visit involves climbing one flight of stairs.
Ouseburn Heritage, have published their Walks & Visits Programme 2005 (copies can be picked up in local libraries and bars also from Ouseburn Resource Centre 0191 230 3229 or Ouseburn Heritage Group 0191 261 6596)
As usual they will be bringing a party of walker to the workshop on the evening of  5th July as part of the Maling Pottery Walk.

9 June 05  Buddleia lover of lime
I have just completed an intersting little job for Ray Bland. Ray wanted a painted chimney pot for his house on Lime Street . The image of  buddleia as a plant of regeneration was from an original idea of |Jill Hlalo's. Around the top of the pot are the words  Buddleia lover of lime, loved by butterfies.

17.1.05 Tempest and sad news
Time was called for John de Birmingham today 17th January 2005.
The first time I met John was at my 50th Birthday party in, he came, and I didn't know him. He turned up at our house with our Josh.
Meet John once and that was it, he was in your life, for good. John the ballad man, the drinker of real ale and country wines. He won a prize in Listowel with one of his ballads, one of a few that he would always entertain you with, he had cheeky ways, he would take the piss out of any one without them knowing it. He would finish off the night with the biggest round any one had seen. (All for one)
He has been greatly missed since he left Newcastle. He came here for such a short time. John moved about and left a big chunk of himself whenever he moved on. He's done it again.
I hope some body will keep singing his songs.
Good bye John and thanks a million .

Yesterday was a great day for the world of pottery. Grayson Perry won the 2003 Turner prize and went home with £20,000 to spend on his wife and new frocks for his alter ego Claire.   Well done Grayson.     http://www.graysonperry.co.uk/

13.9.03 Summers over, what next?

The summer is now over and we are all back to work. Here in the UK. we seen the temperature rise to record levels breaking the 100 centigrade high. I spent that time of the heat wave in Cornwall and had a wonderful time. I have been back in the workshop for a few weeks now and have been catching up on orders and talking with people about new projects.
A project based on the history of the Maling potteries in the Ouseburn Valley will start soon with Benton park Primary School. More news about this as it develops.to see the photos click here
Bewicke Lodge & Parkside School
The 5 panels made at Parkside School are now finished and have been delivered to Bewicke Lodge. They will be installed soon. They had an enthusiastic reception when I delivered them, sparking a lively discussion among the residents as to where they want them to hang. to see the photos click here
Teaching
The academic year has started again as usual I will be teaching Pottery at Gosforth High School for Gosforth Community Education. This year I will be teaching for classes. Including two day time sessions. One of which is for the Edward Lloyd Trust, working with adults with learning disabilities. I had the pleasure to work with users of the Edward Lloyd Trust at the beginning of the summer. We had a full week of workshops exploring ceramics. Many thanks to Ruby at Edward Lloyd's and to the staff at Heaton Adult Association, who were our hosts for the week and did a great job accommodating us and looking after all our needs.

6.6.03:  Why no news???
People have been asking me, why I haven't been posting any news over the past two months. Well of course, it hasn't been that there has no been any, perhaps its just that I have been a little lazy on this front. So here is the news for what it's worth!

BBC Flog it.
The programme was broadcast on 14th May, in the afternoon, so who knows who managed to catch it. I did tape it and was delighted to find that they chose not to use my interview. I did find it a little embarrassing at the time as I couldn't answer the presenters questions.

Helping out the BBC.
The beeb have been back in the workshop over the past few weeks. They are training reporters to do their own filming and sound, with nifty little sony cameras. They needed subjects to do their magic on. I enjoyed it, I don't think the trainees did.

Working out and about............Lindisfarne School.........NCCT...............Parkside School..............West Denton............

Lindisfarne School
I have been busy working out of the workshop over the past few months. I have almost finished the work at Lindisfarne Primary School in Gateshead. Next week I will be building a low wall with bricks that the children have carved and decorated, as part of their sensory garden project. ( photos will be on this site just as soon as the job is finished) to see the photos click here
NCCT
I have also been working at the Northern Centre for Cancer Treatment (NCCT) at the General Hospital, Newcastle. I have been working on tiles for a bathroom on one of the words and will soon start work on a panel for the gents in one of the waiting rooms. I made the tiles and have been painting them with some of the clients of NCCT as part of a project called " ROOM FOR YOU" ( photos will be on this site just as soon as the job is finished). to see the photos click here
Parkside School
Over the years I have been involved with a few projects at Parkside. On this occasion we are making five ceramic panels for a local retirement home Bewicke Lodge in Howden North Tyneside. to see the photos click here
West Denton Community Association.
A long-term project was completed the other week, working with members of a day centre for the elderly in the outer west of Newcastle. This was a very enjoyable project that I was sad to come to the end of. Click here to see photos of this project.

Ouseburn Heritage, Healthy Walks.
Ouseburn Heritage, have published their Walks & Visits Programme 2003 (copies can be picked up in local libraries and bars also from Ouseburn Resource Centre 0191 230 3229 or Ouseburn Heritage Group 0191 261 6596)
As usual they will be bringing a party of walker to the workshop on the evening of 15th July as part of the Maling Pottery Walk.
As always I look forward to see them and answer some of their questions, also to have a little drink with them.

Culture in Education Showcase.
I will be taking part in Culture in Education Showcase. on Tuesday 24 June at Gateshead Stadium. The showcase will be open to the visitors between 2pm and 6pm. Why not come along and talk to me.

Tiles on the Tyne
I was delighted recently to come across a disused and dilapidated building that I think may have been a netty (toilet) on Wincomblee Road Low Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne, just a yew yards from the River Tyne. It is brick built with two panels of terracotta panels, each made up of four tiles. On of them depicts sunflowers and the other, pomegranates. Above the entrance are terracotta swags. I wonder if any body knows the maker.

Thanks to Steve for the email he sent me (March 03)

I see that you have a question regarding the rather dilapidated but non the
less interesting red bricked building with the decorative tiles in
Wincomblee, your news article Tiles on the Tyne, 27th August 2002 refers.

Oddly enough we have been discussing the very same thing on the Tyneside &
Northumberland Local History Group at:
http://www.smartgroups.com/groups/tyneside

We have established that the building was part of a company called
"Wincomblee Brick and Tile Works".

Another interesting discovery for me was that the letters around the old Baltic flour mill on the south bank of the Tyne in Gateshead are made of black glazed ceramic.

Web Life
I was interested to read in The Guardian, The Editor 13.04.02 on the Web life page.
Search Engine Links worth a visit.
www.axisartists.org.uk, a database of contemporary British visual artists, complete with CVs and contact details. So, if you're looking to commission an automated hatstand for your hallway or have some tiles hand painted for your sushi counter ( and, fankly, who isn't?) this is definitely the place for you.

I think that the person who wrote this must have seen looking at my entry on the  axis database.

Heaton Loses it's PotteryRonnie, a former student of HAA Pottery
Due to an outrageous rent increase by Newcastle City Council, Heaton Adult Association at Trewitt Road has had to close the popular HAA Pottery, which for many years has provided pottery classes to people from all over the region and has been a focal point for many local pottery enthusiasts who over the years have turned mountains of clay in to wonderful works of art. .For many of the students, the Pottery was more that just a place to come together for pottery classes, it was a place to socialize and meet friend. I know many people will  dearly miss the pottery and their link with many friends. I certainly will.(CSA May02)

TopTip from a satisfied customer.
Dear Charles,
Firstly I would like to say how delighted we are with our new tiles. From design through to manaufacture and delivery, we could not have wished for anything more than you provided. And our kitchen is now the envy of the entire Street!

A tip for other customers: If you are tiling a wall with sockets / switches, the best method is usually to lift the socket face from the wall and cut the tiles so that the face just covers the cut edges. This will give a better finish than trying to cut around the sockets / switches. There should be enough slack in the wiring to do this without disconnecting any wires - but be sure to switch off at the mains before doing anything at all with electrical fittings! The problem arises when you try and screw the socket / switch faces back on - the screws will probably be too short, due to the thickness of the tiles. Screws up to 50ml are available in most DIY stores, but if you need longer ones go to a specialist electrical contractors suppliers. On Tyneside I found City Electrical Factors in Wallsend supply screws up to 3 inches long, which should be ample in most cases.

The Maling Collectors Society collectors day held at  the workshop on 28th April 2001 was a great success. Around 40 collectors and Maling enthusiasts attended to see Doug and Vi Spearman  making slip cast pots from maling moulds. Doug and Vi  former worked at the Maling Pottery. Also present at the workshop was John Hughes and Cecil Parker engravers at the Maling Pottery. Cecil started work at the pottery in the early 1920's.  John aged 14 was apprenticed to Cecil . International Pottery Event at New Castle Delft
12.04.01

We celebrated with oysters and Guinness, as the kiln was opened to reveal the first pots from a collaborative project with Chris Madge( iMadge ) and New Castle Delft.

Since January this year we have been developing a series of chargers with raised centres based on pottery in the ' Museu de Ceramica ' Barcelona.

The chargers were designed we think for sea food, we just had to see how they worked  with plenty of delicious oysters.

The Photo  (left) is of Chris Madge, holding the first of the chargers from the kiln looked on by Gitte Nijkerk visiting from Holland.
