BELSAY SCHOOL
Belsay County First School is situated at the  heart of the small village of Belsay, Northumberland. The village is dominated by Belsay Hall and Castle. The estate features a garden created in  a quarry, from which the stone was cut that was used in the construction of the Castle and Hall. The Belsay Estate was the inspiration for the images on these ceramic panels.
This project started with a day long workshop with two staff members the school, in my studio. At which they had a crash course in ceramic techniques
.During the autumn of 1988, I did ceramic workshops with all 70 pupils at the school, as a result of which they each made a tile which was used to frame the panels produced in my workshop.
I designed the panels using  details from drawings, made by the children, together with my own. Using tube-lining and glaze painting techniques to put the images on to tiles.
